Sashiba, a migratory bird heralding autumn (2021, 10)
Today's temperature in Shimojishima is 30℃.
The sun is still strong, and at the terminal, a person arriving from the mainland said, "It's hot! It's still summer!"
I've heard that, but Shimojishima and Irabujima, where the airports are located, have begun to fly in the autumn tradition, "Sashiba".
What is "sashiba"?
A member of the hawk family with a body length of about 50 centimeters, it is a migratory bird that breeds in Honshu, Japan and mainland China, and spends the winter in Southeast Asian islands.
Locally, it has long been familiar to the local community as "announcing the arrival of autumn", but it is also designated as an endangered species, and conservation activities are being carried out locally.
Flocks of "Sashiba" come across the sea from far away areas.
Doesn't it feel somewhat romantic that they fly to this land every year, unlike any other island?
I would like to cherish it so that "Sashiba" and others can spend comfortably in the future.
この時期に来島された方は、ぜひ空を見上げて「さしば」を探してみてはいかがでしょうか。
